Landfill leachate

Leachate from landfills is mostly highly polluted. Depending on the age of the landfill, organic pollutants or inert COD and nitrogen predominate. The organic pollution can be treated in aerated lagoons or activated sludge plants. This is followed by complex physico-chemical processes to break down the inert COD and nitrogen.
